Hospitals and other health care providers are struggling to find enough staff members to keep pace with the growing demand for care in the United States.
The shortage of health care professionals has caused an increase in patient and physician deaths, and doctors say that is causing the system to fail in the midst of the nation’s pandemic.
In addition to a shortage of physicians and nurses, hospitals and other medical facilities have a growing need for the services of medical technicians and lab technicians, who have to perform a variety of procedures that require advanced training.
This year alone, hospitals across the country have reported more than 8,000 medical technician deaths, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Many of the deaths have been attributed to infections.
The number of lab technician deaths has grown by roughly 10 percent.
The problem is not just in the hospital setting, but also in other areas where the need for skilled medical technicians is higher.
Medical school graduates are becoming increasingly more important in helping to fill the gap.
But the demand for medical students is also growing.
« We are seeing that as more of our students come in, we are seeing an increase of those [physicians] come in.
So, it’s going to be an increasing number of those students coming in, » said Dr. John G. Waddell, president of the Association of American Medical Colleges. »
I think it’s a very real problem that we’ve seen in the medical workforce, » he added.
In response, the AMA is launching the American Medical Student Network, a campaign to recruit and retain more medical students.
Waddell is hopeful that this year will be different.
The organization plans to hire more than 2,000 more medical school graduates this fall.
« This year will probably be a really good year.
I think we’ll be hiring at least 2,500, » he said. »
The number of doctors we have to hire is increasing.
We’re going to need to recruit more, so I think in the long run it will be a good year for medical schools, » Waddill added.
But there is another challenge.
The number and complexity of the tasks that medical students need to perform has increased, Waddiller said.
For example, a doctor’s office will need to work on multiple fronts at once.
There are new medical conditions, such as cancer or AIDS, that require specialized care.
And many doctors are also teaching students how to operate on patients who have complications that require more sophisticated treatment.
The AMA says its goal is to increase the number of medical students by 10 percent by 2019.
